Facts about wool
Wool is a planet friendly fiber grown on sheep as an anually renewable natural resource. Wool is biodegradable. In soil, wool readily biodegrades into nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water, which are nutrients to the ecosystem. No internationally banned pesticides are used for animal welfare and protection, making the wool industry one of the worlds greenest animal production systems. Wool is a fiber that has natural insulating properties, which reduce heat loss, condensation and reduce noise, providing improved air quality and a comfortable home environment. Wool is a very complex physical and chemical structure which allows it to perform many vital functions in the home. It is composed of over 20 amino acids, that form chains or polymers of protein. It is this which makes wool so versatile. Wool is naturally flame resistant, as a result it complies with many international flammability regulations, without the need for additional flame resistant treatments. Because of its high moisture and nitrogen content, wool is difficult to ignite and has low flame spread and heat release properties. Wool does not melt or drip and has unique self extinguishing properties. -The wool shorn from sheep is completely natural. It is composed entirely of amino acids, the building blocks of life. -Wool is sustainable. It is produced from a totally renewable resource-grass-and is thus environmentally sound. -Wool is renewable. Sheep can be shorn every nine to twelve months. New Zealand sheep produce the cleanest whitest wool. -Wool is biodegradable. In soil, wool readily biodegrades to produce nitrogen sulfur, carbon dioxide and water, which are all plant nutrients. -New Zealand sheep are raised on land unsuitable for most other agricultural purposes. At the same time, they produce lambs for food consumption in addition to growing carpet fiber. -Scientific land management and flock rotation ensure that the land will continue to provide this natural fiber for use and enjoyment of future generations. -No international banned pesticides are used for animal welfare and protection, making the New Zealand sheep industry one of the world’s greenest animal production systems. -Wool carpet improves air quality by absorbing contaminants in indoor air. -Wool chemically with harmful gases such as formaldehyde ( a common pollutant emittrd by building msterials), nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide by neutralizingand binding the gases irreversibly in its structure. -Wool carpet fibers are not a food source for dustmites -Wool is a non-allergenic fiber and does not give off harmfull emissions. -Wool creates a more balanced environment by absorbing vapor from the air in humid conditions and then releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry. |
